Gary Hepburn
First Aid and Safety is run by Gary Hepburn. Gary is a very experienced business man, consultant, trainer/assessor, charity trustee/chair, event manager/controller, medic and public speaker. Gary has experience in many areas health and safety, fire safety, first aid, emergency medicine, finance, customer service, safeguarding, complaints handling and investigation, professional standards, quality assurance, risk management, governance, event management and planning.

Gary has held non-executive director positions on the Dorset Police Authority, Dorset Community Health Service and with NHS Dorset, Bournemouth & Poole where he was the lead on Urgent & Emergency Care, Community Health Services and Mental Health.

Gary’s early career was with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) where he had his first management experience in IT and Quality Assurance then moving into security and health and safety. In 1995, he joined US company, Johnson Controls Inc. and worked his way up to the senior management position of UK Head of Security and Principal Safety Advisor, responsible for advising the board, all staff and the company’s wide range of clients on all aspects of health and safety & security.

In 2001 he set up Sirius Business Services Ltd which still operates today has provided a full range of First Aid, Health & Safety and Fire Safety training and consultancy ever since.

First Aid and Safety was set up in 2013 to provide services primarily to charities, trusts, voluntary organisations and those organising events.

Throughout his career Gary has worked with and advised many major and international companies in the healthcare, petrochemical, financial services, pharmaceutical, media, research, IT, engineering industries, facilities management and Government organisations as well as working with smaller commercial, charitable and voluntary organisations. He has also been responsible for the planning of and management of responses to major incidents such as nuclear and petrochemical incidents.

In the event world he has been responsible for event documentation, event planning, event risk management, interaction with stakeholders (Police, Fire, Ambulance, Local Authority, Traffic management etc), operating a control room, undertaking duties as event silver and attendance at Safety Advisory Group (SAG) meetings, desktop exercises for events with many tens of thousands of attendees.

Gary HepburnGary is a qualified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and has been an active first aider (also trainer and assessor) and medic since he first qualified as a Dive Medic almost 30 years ago. Today Gary keeps his skills fresh by working as an Event Medic at high risk sporting events, as an EMT for private ambulance companies doing medical repatriation, cardiac, high dependency and paediatric transfers and as a Volunteer First Responder for the NHS Ambulance Service attending 999 calls in his local area.

In Gary’s spare time he is Chairman of the Sir Samuel Mico Charities, Sir Henry Edwards Charities, Life Education Wessex & Thames Valley and Weymouth South Scout Group. Gary is also a national board member of Coram Life Education, is Deputy District Commissioner of Scouts for Weymouth and Portland and is churchwarden at his local church, All Saints Wyke Regis.

Gary maintains a very keen interest in resuscitation, pre hospital emergency medicine, health prevention, child protection, safeguarding and mental health.
